Exhibition "Caucasus Biodiversity" opened in the National Museum of Georgia with the support of “David Bezhuashvili Educational Foundation”.
The main purpose of the joint project of the Foundation and the National Museum was to display the samples of ancient scientific researches and synthesis of modern technological capabilities in one space; the project resulted in creating a new, modern, powerful educational center. Exhibition space is available both for viewing as well as for implementation of the study process. For this purpose a special corner has been created for children and adolescents in the space.
The new space features unique and richest geological, botanical and zoological collections of the Caucasus preserved in the collections of the Georgian National Museum, including rare and endangered species or already extinct species. It is important to note that collection of natural history samples for the museum goes behind to 1852. In 1856-1868 the first exhibition-cabinet of the Museum of Natural Sciences was organized by initiative of Friedrich Bayern, the natulistist. After 150 years since the end of the mentioned exhibition, the National Museum of Georgia revived the unique exposition with the support of the “David Bezhuashvili's Educational Foundation”.
It should be emphasized that the part of the exhibits was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1867-1869, where many of them earned gold, silver and bronze medals. Today, the guests are able to look at the exhibits in the space created by modern museum technologies.
The exhibition displays biodiversity of the Caucasus region - geological, botanical and zoological collections. The space offers the guests to view minerals, rocks, fossilized invertebrates, herbarium samples of higher and lowest plants, mollusks, insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, which perfectly reflect the evolution of the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Caucasus region in general. Collections include the endemic spread over the Caucasus territory, endangered or already extinct species. The project has been implemented by the “David Bezhuashvili's Educational Foundation” in partnership with Mr. Oleg Cherepanov, the Maecenas and the Georgian Industrial Group.
The project was prepared 150 years after the first exhibition of the Museum of Science with active involvement of the exhibition partner National Geographic Georgia.
